Localized compliance with Castigliano's theorem

I'm attempting to compile a local compliance matrix using Castigliano's theorem as described here. I'm having trouble with it and attempted to do a simple example by hand and picked the double cantilever beam specimen and analyzed it with Euler-Bernoulli beam theory (attached). Despite my best efforts, I can't reproduce the correct answer using the theorem as is but only if I modify the limits of integration.

Fracture mechanics of shape memory alloys: review and perspectives

Shape memory alloys (SMAs) are intermetallic alloys displaying recoverable strains that can be an order of magnitude greater than in traditional alloys due to their capacity to undergo a thermal and/or stress-induced martensitic phase transformation. Since their discovery, the SMA industry has been dominated by products for biomedical applications with geometrically small feature sizes, especially endovascular stents.

The surface-forming energy release rate based fracture criterion for elastic-plastic crack propagation and interpretation on paradox of Rice

The J-integral based criterion is widely used in elastic-plastic fracture mechanics. However, it is not rigorously applicable when plastic unloading appears during crack propagation. One difficulty is that the energy density with plastic unloading in the J-integral cannot be defined unambiguously.

Load Displacement curve for XFEM in ABAQUS

I am using Maxps Damage criteria for an XFEM crack for a three point bending case. I am using displacement loading on the specimen and wish to plot reaction load v/s mouth opening displacement. I would like to know how to obtain the crack tip opening displacement in ABAQUS. All the journal papers I read show a slump in reaction force after the crack starts to propagate. I plot the results and contour plots show me clearly that the crack has started to propagate. Please help.

Numerical analysis of quasi-static fracture in functionally graded materials

This work investigates the existing capabilities and limitations in numerical modeling of fracture problems in functionally graded materials (FGMs) by means of the well-known finite element code ABAQUS. Quasi-static crack initiation and growth in planar FGMs is evaluated. Computational results of fracture parameters are compared to experimental results and good agreement is obtained. The importance of the numerical fit of the elastic properties in the FE model is analyzed in depth by means of a sensitivity study and a novel method is presented.

Plastic J significance in CTOD equation

I am working on the validation of CTOD.

In the evaluation of CTOD using the
J-integral approach as applied in ASTM E1290 and E1820, the plastic J
component is defined as (Npl*Apl)/(Bn*Bo)
Npl=dimensionless constant(plasticity)
Apl=area under load vs. displacement plot
Bn=ligamen length (W-a)
Bo=section thickness

On E1820 there are different functions provided for Npl if Apl is
evaluated differently (CMOD or load-line displacement).

Comparing experimental fracture properties and micromechanical (or global-local/multiscale) finite element simulations

I am interested in developing a global-local finite element model (micro/macro) to simulate flexural testing of a composite material. Flexural loading will be applied on global model (macro) and crack propagation will be simulated in the local model (micro). I want to compare stress intensity factor or any other fracture property obtained from local model (micro) with that of experimental results.

I would appreciate if anyone could suggest some references/literature in this area. Any kind of suggestions would be great!

Forensics: residual stress of fractured part

I’ll present this below without the answer, in case you want to enjoy a little brain teaser. It is a solid and experimental mechanics problem that, while not terribly practical, I found very interesting:

A part fractures cleanly in two by brittle fracture (no plasticity) under the action of residual and applied stresses. You only have the broken part in front of you, no prior information.

 What were the original residual stresses on the fracture plane?

Modelling fracture of graphene using Griffith’s criterion and quantized fracture mechanics

In armchair graphene sheets, crack propagates perpendicular to the applied strain, whereas crack propagation in zigzag sheets occurs at an angle to the straining direction. This occurs due to different bond structure along armchair and zigzag directions as shown in Fig. 1. Videos 1 and 2 show the fracture of armchair and zigzag sheets, respectively.
