A fully funded PhD position in "Damage Mitigation in Lightweight Marine Composites" is available at the University of Genoa (Italy), within the activities of the newly formed National Center on Sustainable Mobility (Spoke 3: Waterways, Work Package WP1: Energy Efficiency).
The research project will investigate the response of marine sandwich composite structural systems, to design concepts able to mitigate damage and to improve resistance, resilience and energy efficiency of mobility systems in waterways.

PhD positions in composite materials for wind turbine rotor blades at DTU Wind Energy

The Department of Wind Energy at the Technical University of Denmark is advertsing new PhD-positions within 15 topics.

The PhD projects #5 to #9 in the Wind Energy Materials and Components Division all relate to wind turbine rotor blades, which are very large composite structures - the largests blades are now exceeding 100 metre in length. The PhD-projects cover various aspects of fibre composites from full blade structural scale down to materials scale.

Kinetic relations and local energy balance for LEFM from a nonlocal peridynamic model

Abstract: A simple nonlocal field theory of peridynamic type is applied to model brittle fracture. The kinetic relation for the crack tip velocity given by Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM) is recovered directly from the nonlocal dynamics, this is seen both theoretically and in simulations. An explicit formula for the change of internal energy inside a neighborhood enclosing the crack tip is found for the nonlocal model and applied to LEFM.

The position is under the supervision of Prof. Mattia Bacca in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at UBC, Vancouver – Canada. An improved semi-analytical solution for stress at round-tip notches

Highlights

 

A semi-analytical model is developed for the notch tip maximum stress.

Application of the formula to U and blunt V-notches is demonstrated.

The results can be used to assess the brittle failure of notched components.
