The college of engineering at Boston University has embarked on a bold new strategic plan that will pursue excellence and impact along six convergent and collaborative research themes:  (1) Intelligent, Autonomous and Secure Systems, (2) Synthetic Biology, Tissue Engineering and Mechanobiology, (3) Energy, Sustainability and Climate, (4) Materials by Design (5) Photonics and Optical Systems, and (6) Neuroengineering, Neuroinformatics, and Neuroscience.

In our center: “The physics of metal plasticity” we conduct basic science to reveal the physical mechanisms governing the mechanical properties of metals, such as strength and formability. When metals are deformed plastically, dislocations (defects in the crystal lattice) multiply and self-organize in 3D patterns. We have developed a hard X-ray microscope at the European Synchrotron Radiation Source (ESRF) that for the first time allows visualization of how these patterns form.

One Ph.D. research position is available in January 2022 at Iowa State University’s Mechanical Engineering Department in the area of soft tissue biomechanics and biomaterials. The candidates must be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. Permanent Resident/Green Card holder and have earned a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering, Bioengineering, or a related field. The selected candidate is expected to start no later than June 2022.

Two Ph.D. positions in the area of mechanics of soft materials are available immediately/Fall21/Spring22 at UT Austin. The students can choose to enroll in Engineering Mechanics or Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering. Some background in nonlinear solid mechanics, linear algebra, and numerical methods (finite element method and/or isogeometric analysis) is preferable, but not required!

We seek candidates with research experience in computational mechanics:

• PhD in Mechanical Engineering / Solid Mechanics / Material Science;
• Specialization in the Mechanics of Composite Materials and damage modeling of composites at different length scales.
• Expertise in linear and nonlinear Finite Element analysis;
• Familiarity with multi-physics simulations for composite manufacturing processes;
• Good coding skills for scientific computing

Together with Ondřej Rokoš and Milan Jirásek, we are searching for a postdoctoral researcher to work with us on leveraging quasi-continuum methods towards robust simulations of initiation and propagation of instabilities in architectured materials and flexible mechanical metamaterials. Eligible candidates must hold a Ph.D. degree awarded in 2015 or later.

Several postdoctoral and graduate student openings with primary focus on biomechanics is available immediately in the Shenoy Research Group at the University of Pennsylvania. We are looking for strongly motivated candidates to work on Nation Cancer  supported Cancer Metastasis Network Center. The center will focus on 1) cell-matrix interactions in cancer, 2) nuclear mechano-transduction and 3) cancer cell motility.
