We introduce a geometric framework to calculate the residual stress fields and deformations of nonlinear solids with inclusions and eigenstrains. Inclusions are regions in a body with different reference configurations from the body itself and can be described by distributed eigenstrains. Geometrically, the eigenstrains define a Riemannian 3-manifold in which the body is stress-free by construction. The problem of residual stress calculation is then reduced to finding a mapping from the Riemannian material manifold to the ambient Euclidean space.

Prof. Wei Cai at the Mechanical Engineering Department of Stanford University is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to contribute to the ParaDiS program (http://paradis.stanford.edu). This is a large scale parallel program for dislocation dynamics simulations for metal plasticity. A suitable candidate should have strong backgrounds on numerical methods and parallel programming, as well as solid mechanics and/or materials science.
A book review by Prof. George Weng (Rutgers University) is published in the Journal of Applied Mechanics, November, 2013. The book, Micromechanics of Composite Materials, was authored by Prof. George Dvorak and published by Springer, 2013.
