Recruiting PhD students to study Solid Mechanics at Harvard

Each year, several new students begin their studies of Solid Mechanics for PhD degrees at Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.  The students come from all over the world.  We have no constraint on where they come from.

Faculty members in Solid Mechanics.   The School of Engineering and Applied Sciences is not divided into departments, but faculty do assemble into programs.  Faculty members directly responsible for the program of Solid Mechanics are

Application.  We will be delighted if you find that your interest matches ours.  In the application form, please check the “Solid Mechanics” box.  If you are interested in working with a particular professor, please list the name of the professor in your application.  In the statement of purpose, please indicate your experience or aspiration relevant to Solid Mechanics.  If you have done research, please tell us details.  Please mention in your statement of purpose the name of the professor and your reasons.  We read each statement of purpose with care, and look for good matches.  So, please help us.   

Mentioning the name of a professor does not bind you with the professor.  You can choose to work with anyone at Harvard once you are here.  

Admission.  Individual faculty members can make recommendations, but cannot determine which student to admit. Financial support.  Every PhD student receives a fellowship, which is sufficient to cover all expenses to study and live in Cambridge.  The fellowship, however, is rarely offered to a Master student.  If your final goal is to obtain a PhD degree at Harvard, you may not wish to apply for admission as a Master student.  Instead, you may apply for admission as a PhD student:  you only need a Bachelor degree to do so.   

Your program of study.  We are flexible.  Once you come to Harvard, you and your advisor will work together to define a program of study specifically suitable to you.   

If you absolutely cannot wait to plan ahead, here is what you need to get started.  The PhD degree requires that you take 10 courses.  You may look at the catalogue of courses at Harvard.   Harvard students can also take courses at MIT.  Here is a very short list of Harvard courses popular among students of Solid Mechanics:

Q:  Can I apply for enrollment in Spring?

A:  No.  We admit students once a year.  All students are enrolled in Fall.

Q:  If I can obtain external funding, will my chance for admission improve?

A:  Yes.  Admissions are principally based on two factors:  (1) An applicant is competitive in the pool of applicants, without the consideration of funding; (2) A professor is willing to support the applicant.  By obtaining external funding, you help to resolve (2).

Q:  I attach my resume.  Can you tell me if I am likely to be admitted?

A:  Usually No. An applicant is admitted on a competitive basis within a pool of applicants.  It is hard for me to give you a useful reply without going through the pool.

Q:  My scores for the English tests are below the levels set by your school.  What is the chance for me to be admitted?

A:  Very low.  An applicant is admitted by a committee of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.  It takes an extraordinary effort for a member of the faculty to persuade the committee to accept an applicant with very low scores.

I am currently a PhD student in Caltech. I have strong interests in Applied Mechanics with special focus on solid mechanics and physics of earthquake rupture. I am expecting to graduate by 2009. Are there any opportunities for Post Doc. positions available at Harvard Solid Mechanics?

I am a masters student presently from Imperial College London. I am working on alternative modeling of fracture and more specifically the Rice-Tracey model. I am using this to model adhesive fracture on a DCB specimen using FEA. I have a very keen interest in pursuing a PhD in the field of fracture mechanics and specifically in modeling of fracture. I would be glad if you could enlighten me whether there are any openings in this field. If yes, then I would be honoured to apply for this rare opportunity.

Hi, I am a  masters student currently at Rutgers U. studying micromechanics and ferroelectrics under Dr. G.J. Weng.  I have a strong interest in solid mechanics and I am currently applying to Harvard for the Fall 2009.  I just want to say that am interested in your research along with the research of John Hutchinson but unfortunately for me he is retiring.

Persons holding a PhD or its equivalent, or who have completed most of the work required to earn the PhD elsewhere, may apply to a PhD program in the Graduate School only if it is an unrelated field of study.  My name is Hee-yuen koh and I'm working in the national research center in South Korea after graduating the master degree in KAIST(Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology). These days, I'm looking for a Ph.D position to study about behavior of piezoelectric materials as a micro generator.  Besides, I'm developing a  programe for predicting its behavior like elastic wave propagation and generated electromagnetic field in it.

 Because this calculation is deeply related to the stress and strain of the material, I am very interested in studying solid mechanics and getting the Ph.D position just like what you are offering. If it is related to your work, I'd like to send you an email with specific plans and ideas. You are most welcome to send emails to me.  The subject of electromechanical transducer is of general interest in my group for many years. 

As indicated before, individual professors cannot admit students.  Students can only be admitted at the level of the School, on a competitive basis.  So if you are interested, you will need to apply for admission later this year.

No fellowship is available for Master students at Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.  Every one of our PhD students receives a fellowship that fully covers tuition and living expenses. 

To apply for our PhD program, you do not need to have a master degree.  Thus, if you are interested in obtaining a PhD degree in the end, please apply for the PhD program directly.

Dear Muthu:  Thank you for your interest.  It is hard to make such suggestions in general.  You might want to take a look at our theoretical papers quickly.  In the introductions, many applications are mentioned.  These applications might give you some ideas of experimental work needed.

In general, experimental work is needed to develop basic testing methods, and to explore mechanisms of mechanical behavior of gels, including deformation, transport, and fracture.

Dear Prof.Suo,

First I am very thankful for your valuable reply. Actually in my master thesis I had worked on hydrogel material (above 90% water content). I had developed both uniaxial and equbiaxial experimental setup and charaterized the material. To prepare the polyacrylamide hydrogel we used ammonium persulphate solution(APS) as a initiator . Here I observed that if we increase the APS concentration the softness of the gel changes tremendously. I eagerly want to work in that area with your group. Also I have seen some papers in the area of swelling.

Dear Ashok:  Every year we in Solid Mechanics at Harvard admit several PhD students.  Students submit applications online at the end of each year, and enroll in the Fall of the following year. 

We now have several professors in Solid Mechanics, and admit students interested in theory, computation, or experiment.  You can find details of ongoing research by looking at the websites of individual professors in Solid Mechanics

I am currently an MPhil student in Institute of Textiles and Clothing, The Hong Kong Polytechnic Uiversity. The topic of my research is about the flexible and stretchable electronics. I have read all the related papers from you.

Though I am majored in textile field, we have learned a lot of basic knowleges to support our research including physics, solid mechanics, and chemistry. And before the Mphil study, I am a research assistant in the group of "fabric sensors for three-dimensional pressure mapping surfaces", where solid mechanics also played a great role.

Therefore, I have made a strong interest in solid mechanics. I sincerely hope that I can continue my Ph.D study in solid mechanics at Harvard. May I have an opportunity to join in your research group?

Dear prof suo

                          I am a Post gradute (Mtech) student Indian Institute of Technology Madras. I am Pursuing my masters in clinical engineering . I did my bachelor's degree in mechanical Engineering. I am doing a project in modelling DEA actuators for developing a Medical device. Clinical Engineering does not involve any solid mechanicsI am learning it through my project which is of 8 months duration. Do I have a chance to pursue research in solid MEchanics and modelling in harward if i can clear GRE ??

Dear Midhun:  Thank you for your interest.  It is great that you are trying to model dielectric elastomer actuators for medical applications.  I have recently given lectures on dielectric elastomers at a summer school.  Partcipants at the summer school seemed to like the subject.  Here are the slides for the lectures, along with written notes used for a course at Harvard.

Back to your question.  It is really hard to answer such a question.  The admission is done at the level of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.  A candidate needs to be competative among the pool of the other candidates.  Of course, a candidate with interest that matches that of a member of faculty helps.

To sum up, it is hard to answer your question without placing your application among the pool of applicants.

Hi,

For my Msc thesis, I have worked on prediction of mechanical behavior of carbon nanotubes with structural defects. I have developed a new theoretical method accompanying with molecular dynamics simulation.I have read almost all the questions and your responses. Based on what you said, nobody knows who will be admitted except the admission committee.

Firstly, would please guide me to know the average admission standards? Or if there is any standards or its only the personal view of the committee mambers?

Secondly, what should I do after admission? I have been admitted in some universities, but suddenly the faculties change their mind. I have paid a lot of money without any success.

Dear Mehrdad:  I am really sorry that you had to spend a lot of money without any success.  Here are some thoughts about your questions.

Average admission standards. The processes of graduate admissions differ from place to place.  It is hard to make useful statements about average admission standards.  But significant factors are quite common:  the match of interest between the applicants and professors, prior training, grades, GRE scores, journal publications, etc.

After admission.  You should carefully read the letter of admission.  If you have any question about the letter, always ask.  If a formal letter of admission comes from a university or a department, the decision is usally unlikely to be changed.

I am Sri Harsha T R, currently in my final year of study of the Bachelors of Technology in Mechanical Engineering with Industrial & Production Engineering as Major. My college is Koneru Lakshmaiah College of Engineering (www.klce.ac.in) in India. I will be completing my degree in May 2012.

 I have done many govt funded research projects in vast areas such as Biofuels form vegetable oils, algae. crash analysis in LS DYNA, CFD analysis in FLUENT, LMS Virtual.Lab, Projects in the field of Solid Mechanics, Finite Element methods, manufacturing, Production planning, inventory management, supply chain management, JIT production technique etc. I also have knowledge of different software’s such as Altair Hyperworks, Ansys, Pro-Engineer, Catia, LABVIEW. Also programming languages such as C,C++, Microsoft Visual Basic.

I want to apply for PhD. Can you suggest how well do I stand a chance ? Also can I apply to PhD programs directly after my bachelors degree without Masters ?

You have just listed very impressive acomplishments.  The admission at Harvard is done at the level of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.  It is difficult to judge the chance of an individual candidate without comparing to the pool of the candidates.

Yes, you can apply to the PhD program without a master degree.

If you are certain of your area of reserch, and no position in the area is available at Harvard, then you should look elsewhere.  If you think that you might also be intereted in other areas of reserch, then maybe you should take a look at activities in other groups at Harvard.  For example, have you looked at the Rob Wood Group and the Rob Howe group?

Hello Sir,

The thread is much more than just useful which prompted me to write in to you.

I will be completing my master's this year and is enthusiastically in search of researchers who are working in theoretical aspect of solid mechanics. What I learn till now is that this field is gradually becoming saturated, though there might be areas that are yet untapped. Do correct me if I am wrong. Sir, my master's thesis focuses on studying the effect of nonlocal elasticity to predict the vibrational mechanics in single-walled carbon nanotubes (cylinder and sphere).

Please let me know of any oppurtunity for me to work on theoretical area at Harvard.

Hi:  I have not worked in the area you've mentioned.  But many areas of theoretical mechanics are interconnected.  Skills picked in doing one project will be useful in doing other projects. 

Each year we have a large number of applicants, but we only have space to admit a small fraction of applicants.  The admission is done on a competitive basis.

Dear Zhigang Suo,

I have a postdoc position in engineering Aerospace at Second University of Naple (Italy).  I am intersted in postdoctoral position in numerical simulation (Boundary Element Method or Finite Element Method coded on GPU)

My main area of interests is Boundary Element Method coded on parallel architecture, both CPU and GPU hardware. Is there any Postdoc position available regarding my interests?

My name is Abhishek Saini and I am from Indian Institute of Technology Patna (IITP), India, in my final year of masters in Mechatronics Engineering (Department of Mechanical Engineering) with focus on Dielectric elastomer research. It is expected to complete on May 2016.
My current research project for my master’s program is in “Dielectric elastomer actuator for microfluidic application” and I have just submitted a co-authored article which was accepted by Journal of Mechanical Science and technology, another conference was also accepted in SPIE 2016. I am highly interested in building upon my master’s experience and expanding my research into related areas.
