A Different Kind of a Book Involving Electromagnetism and Potential Theory

Submitted by Ajit R. Jadhav on

Unlike other blog-posts of mine, I am not going "own" this particular thread. By that, I mean to say: I am going to only begin this thread and immediately turn it over to you completely. I am not going to watch over whether the discussion here continues to stick to its main theme or not, whether it slides into some minor side issues, whether it deserts the main theme altogether, etc., the way I usually do.

The Meaning of the Concept of Potential in Mechanics (and in Physics)

Submitted by Ajit R. Jadhav on

If someone knows of books/articles dealing with the meaning of the concept of potential in physics (or concerning the physical bases underlying the energy methods of mechanics) then I would very much appreciate getting to know about these.

Mechanism To Increase Energy Efficiency.

Submitted by Jigar Y. Patel on

View the figure attached. It is about using Cam for increase
energy efficiency. Cam are generally used to open and close valve of IC
Engine. I am going to show you another use. Left side initial position.
Right side final position. Redius of cam continuously decrease.Sliding
weight (MG) applied on Cam. With the help of rope weight(MG*Cos(b)) is
fixed with cam. We consider b as 45. So cos 45=.70. This fixed weight
should be 0.70 MG. Which balance the sliding weight applied on cam in
tengential direction. As sliding weight come down the fixed weight go
up. But the twist is the redius of cam decrease nominal continuously.
So sliding weight come down little bit and fixed weight go up much
more. We consider sliding weight come dowm H2 height and fixed weight

Columbia University

Department of Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics

The Department of Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics invites applications for TWO tenure-track faculty positions to support a Department initiative in Sustainable Engineering. Qualified individuals are sought with expertise in either:

(1) Computational mechanics - with an emphasis on large-scale computing applied to multi-scale, multi-phase modeling of materials (from nano- to macro-scale), and/or mechanics and materials challenges in energy and/or the environment.

Terra Preta Soil Technology

Please look at this low cost alternative CO2 Sequestration system.
The integrated energy strategy offered by Terra Preta Soil technology may
provide the only path to sustain our agricultural and fossil fueled power
structure without climate degradation, other than nuclear power.

I feel we should push for this Terra Preta Soils CO2 sequestration strategy as not only a global warming remedy for the first world, but to solve fertilization and transport issues for the third world. This information needs to be shared with all the state programs.

The economics look good, and truly great if we had CO2 cap & trade in place:

These are processes where you can have your Bio-fuel and fertility too.
Terra Preta' soils I feel has great possibilities to revolutionize sustainable agriculture into a major CO2 sequestration strategy.

Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University Faculty Positions

Submitted by Yongqiang Li on

The Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics (ESM) at Virginia Tech seeks applications for two tenured or tenure-track faculty colleagues. The ideal candidates are expected to interface mechanics with the domain of biology (cellular mechanics, soft tissue biomechanics, macro-molecular biology, biodynamics, biofluids); the domains of nanotechnology or nanobiotechnology (mechanics of self-assembly, nanocomposites, functional nanodevices, biological and biomedical applications); or the domain of energy, with an emphasis on nanoscale and microscale problems or biological principles (fuel cells, renewable energy, energy conversion, clean energy, energy storage). However, intellectual depth is more important than the specific area of specialization, since ESM faculty members are expected to have a broad scholarly interest in engineering with a special emphasis on the fundamental mechanics.
