Two PhD positions are available starting Summer/Fall 2019 in the Manufacturing and Mechanics Lab (MaMeL) within the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison under the supervision of Professor Pavana Prabhakar. The research topic is in the area of Mechanics of Hybrid Composites, and will involve theoretical/computational multiscale and multiphysics modeling in combination with experimental manufacturing and characterization studies.

Required Background for the Positions 

In our recent work, we construct a hybrid light-powered tensegrity robot composed of both hard and soft materials. The tensegrity robot shows great scalability, deployability, impact-mitigation capability, high load capacity, and can be precisely controlled to move on multiterrains. It is an example of combining interesting structures and interesting actuating materials in soft robotics.

One PhD position is available for Fall 2019 in the Advanced Multifunctional and Multiphysics Metamaterials Lab (AM³L) in the Bioresource Engineering Department of McGill University. The research topic is on the area of Mechanics of Architected Multifunctional Materials. Theoretical and computational multiscale modelling along with experimental (3D printing and characterization) studies will be conducted for multiphysics analysis of architected cellular solids. The candidate will work under the supervision of Dr. Hamid Akbarzadeh at McGill University.

Wrinkles are commonly observed in uniaxially stretched rectangular sheets with clamped-clamped boundaries, and can disappear upon excess stretching. Here we explore this wrinkling and restabilization behavior both analytically and numerically. We find that Poisson’s ratio plays a crucial role in the wrinkling and restabilization behavior. Smaller Poisson’s ratio makes later onset of wrinkling, lower amplitude and earlier disappearance of wrinkles.

Here is our review article on fatigue of hydrogels. This is the first review of the subject. We review fatigue as any failure of material under prolonged static or cyclic loads. The paper starts with fundamentals, and covers a broad field, yet leaving a lot of interesting questions to be answered. The paper links the chemistry and mechanics of hydrogels.
