metal plasticity/viscoplasticity literature review

An intensive metal plasticity/viscoplasticity literature review is needed, with drawbacks and capabilities of different models. Any found previous work?

DigiMAT: new software for composite material modeling

I'm working on modeling of mechanical properties of polymer based nanocomposites with clay.I have prepared a code for distributing plat like particles in polimar matrix (preparing RVE) with ABAQUS. I saw DIGIMAT software by www.e-xstream.com Company in internet some times ago. Now I want to test accuracy and application of this software one my project. I want to know if anyone in this club has had worked with this software and so if any one can provide me with a link of academic version of this software for a while.

Graduate Student Position at UBC, Vancouver, Canada

There is a potential opening for a graduate student research assistantship in Department of Mechanical Engineering, at The University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. Interested students with strong academic background with interest in theory and experiments in the areas of dynamics and vibrations, applied (solid) mechanics are encouraged to apply. Initial queries to be addressed to Srikanth (spa21@bath.ac.uk).

Postdoctoral and PhD Research Positions in Computational Nanomechanics at the University of Pittsburgh

Several postdoctoral and PhD research positions are currently open in the Advanced Computational Technology (ACT) group at the University of Pittsburgh for the following research projects in the multidisciplinary areas of computational nanomechanics, bio-nanotechnology, renewable energy, and nanomedicine:

Abaqus cylindrical

I am currently simulation arc welding process. i have performed plate butt welding using abaqus software. Dflux subroutine was used and the heat source model i used is goldak double ellipsoidal model.

Now i want to apply this technique to the welding of pipes, but currently i am having difficulty with the nodal coordinates. I have defined my glodal CS to cylindrical coordinate system in part and assembly defintion. But after generating the mesh the input file contain nodal coordinates in cartesian coordinates.

Solving Reynolds equation (EHL problem)

I'm working on the numerical solution of the mixed problem in lubricated contacts. Does anyone know if the lubricant equation (Reynolds one) was never solved for film thickness instead of pressure (like actually is done with MGMI techniques) in some pubblication?

Natural frequencies and mode shapes of rotordynamics

I would be gratefull in advance if you send me an illustrative examples about how to find out the natural frequencies and mode shape of rotor-bearing system by using abaqus.

What is the Shore A hardness used for?

Choose a channel featured in the header of iMechanica:

The Shore A and D hardness tests are widely used by the rubber industry.  However, I'm not sure what practical use these numbers can be put to during design.  My current feeling is that Shore hardness numbers can at best give you a feel for the texture of the rubber - a Shore A value of 5 = gummy bear texture, Shore A = 40 implies erasure texture etc.

Can someone explain how Shore hardness values can be used in the design of mechanical components made of rubber?

Thanks in advance,

Postdoctoral position at University of Cambridge

A postdoctoral research associate position is available starting October 1st at the Department of Engineering in Cambridge. The successful candidate will work on a project on parallel numerical methods for fluid-structure interaction with application to life sciences.

Details About "NLGEOM"Command in ANSYS

Choose a channel featured in the header of iMechanica:

I am developing an FEA code for a viscoelastic contact analysis. Right now the formulation is assuming small deformations. After deformation I am getting the volume of the body to be less than the original. I want to preserve the volume. ANSYS gives exact results as my code by carrying a normal contact analysis.

Fluid Flow through a Porous Sphere

Without doing a serious CFD project does anyone know of a back of the envelope calculation or model that will let me show the following.  Given:

Simple beam bending FEM vs. theory comparison error

I am having some trouble getting accurate values for max. stress and max. deflection for an FEM model of a simply supported I-beam in bending. I am using I-DEAS 12 NX to solve the model. I'm pretty new to finite element analysis as a whole, but I know that getting any more
than 10% error (relative to Euler beam theory) in max deflection or stress for a 60x10x8 in. should not happen. Strangely enough, using the same boundary conditions and meshing techniques for a 60x10x8 in. rectangular solid, I find the results I was expecting. Here are some more details:

How can I find material properties of metallic glasses?

I am now going to model a sample with metallic glass (Cu-Zr-Ti) under stress and temperature loads. I wonder whether there is some existing database to find material properties, in particular, the creep properties with respect to temperature and stresses. Then I can use these data as input for a FE analysis.

Thank you very much!

how to simulate fibre direction?

Hi all

I am modeling a complex muscle with fibre reinforced. The fibre direction is not constant in this muscle. It is changing with the integration point in the model. Is there anyone who got idea on how to simulate the variable fibre directions in Abaqus?  Can user subroutine ORIENT do this?

 Many thanks,

Ben

Electromechanical screw driven Tensile machine

Choose a channel featured in the header of iMechanica:

I would like to know what is the role of data sampling, data capture rate and bandwidth in case of electromechanical static tensile test. What are their optimum values for a static tensile test of metals according to ASTM standards.

We are deciding to buy Instron 5567 series for 50kN. But we are unable to decide whether that high data acquisition rate, bandwidth is required. Please suggest.
