A compliantly fixed hemispherical indenter in adhesive contact with an elastic sample firmly bonded to a rigid base is considered under the assumption that the rigid base undergoes small-amplitude high-frequency normal (vertical) oscillations. A general law of the rate-dependent JKR-type adhesion is assumed, which relates the work of adhesion to the contact front velocity. Using the Bogoliubov averaging approach in combination with the method of harmonic balance, the leading-order asymptotic model is constructed for steady-state vibrations.

The Mechanics of Soft Materials Lab (https://www.msm.seas.ucla.edu/) led by Prof Lihua Jin in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) has a PhD opening to be filled in 2025 fall. Successful candidates are expected to work on modeling, simulations, and experiments of soft materials, soft tissue and soft robots. The ideal candidates will be highly motivated with a strong background in solid mechanics and computation, and be fluent in spoken and written English.

Ph.D/Postdoc positions will be available at the Programmable Materials and Structures lab (www.promastlab.com) of the University of Pavia in Italy. Candidates with background in mechanics, materials, finite element analysis, topology optimization, 4D printing are all welcome to apply.
