flexural rigidities of orthotropic composite laminates

Submitted by kaizen on

Dear all,

Iam working in composite orthotropic laminates consists of many plies having different material properties in each ply. How to determine or calculate the flexural rigidity (D) of this laminate by transforming these composite into an isotropic model. The idea is that flexural rigidity of the orthotropic laminate is being smeared into a single isotropic formulation.

For instance: if I have three plies:

Ply1 : D1x and D1y

Ply2: D2x and D2y

Ply3: D3x and D3y

After a long process (somebody may recall I made also quite some chaos on imechanica to complain with the review process in a previous journal), this paper was accepted.  Ask me a preprint if you are interested.  I can attach here a few images only.

Timescale Multiscaling in Atomistic Simulations of Experimental Nanostructures

Submitted by vikastomar on

We all know most atomistic simulations in nanomechanics are performed on ideal materials that are not produced in laboratory and most experiments in nanomechanics are performed on materials that cannot be analyzed using atomistic simulations. Atomistic simulations indeed have a great capability in revealing a material's behavior with only constitutive law being used is that in the form of interatomic potential. The strain rate in atomistic simulations is of the order of 100000000 per sec which has not yet been achieved in any experiment or in a practical application.

Industry-level journal about FEM applications

Submitted by setareh on

Hi dear mechanicians,

I am about to publish the results of my MSc thesis in a journal. The thing is, my project was carried out in industry about multi-scale FE simulation of impact in composites. So it is merely an industry-level application of available methods.

I want to ask if any of you have any particular journal in mind, in which publishing such a paper is rather easy (doable) and does not have a long waiting list for review??

Looking forward to your suggestions

Thanx a lot

Modified Cam Clay in ABAQUS

Submitted by nislamce_adfa on

Hi All,

I am a new user in ABAQUS. I am interested to model soft soil of embankment using Modified Cam Clay model. I have modeled the similar problem in AFENA but in 2D. I am interested for 3D case. Can anyone extend co-operation, how to model soft soil in ABAQUS using Modified Cam Clay?

My email address: nislamce_adfa [at] yahoo.com

Thanks in advance.

Comments on Cauchy's stress theorem

Submitted by Structrual Engineer on

I have been bugged by this question ever since I studied cauchy's stress theory 10 years ago.

In cauchy's analysis of solids, there two popular geometries.

First one is a unit cube used for deriving equations of equilibrium.

And the second one is a tetraheadon used for deriving Cauchy's stress theorem.

In both the cases limit of force equilibrium as solid geometry shrinks to a point is derived.

My question has been, how come limit of force equilibrium at a point inside a solid depenent on the path taken by limiting process.

Cast iron plasticity in abaqus

Hello all,

I want to use Cast iron plasticity in Abaqus/Explicit, but the cast iron plasticity in abaqus can only be used in Abaqus/Standard, so  a vumat should be written to do it. But in the document, the formulation of flow potential in tension region  is not given explicitly, i stopped here.

Can anyone help me with this?

if anyone have the ph.d. Thesis of Hjelm,H.E., please send me a copy.

thanks.
