Please Enroll in the Online Course: Introduction to Mechanics

Submitted by Zheng Jia on

This course presents an introduction to mechanics, instructed by Prof. Wei YANG at Zhejiang University, a leading scientist in solid mechanics. Mechanics is the science concerning force, motion, and deformation, studying the macroscopic and microscopic mechanical behaviors of complex matters in nature and engineering.

Multiple PhD positions in mechanics and/or materials at Northeastern University (Spring/Fall 2021)

Submitted by Ruobing Bai on

My group in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at Northeastern University has multiple fully funded PhD positions, starting Spring/Fall 2021. Successful candidates will be working in the broad area of mechanics and/or materials, including but not limited to biomimetic and biological materials, soft active materials, soft robotics, multiphysics characterization, design, and functionalization. Research will be focused on the combination of theory and experiment.

Self-excited vibrations due to viscoelastic interactions

Submitted by Antonio Papangelo on

Self-excited vibrations represent a big concern in engineering, particularly in automotive, railway and aeronautic industry. Many lumped models have been proposed over the years to analyze the stability of such systems. Among the instability mechanisms a falling characteristic of the friction law and mode coupling have been shown to give friction-excited oscillations. The mass-on-moving-belt system has been studied extensively in Literature, very often adopting a prescribed form of the friction law and linearizing the contact stiffness.
