We are organizing a focus session on "02.01.15 Physics of Bio-Inspired Materials (DSOFT, DBIO, DPOLY) [same as 04.01.42, 01.01.54]" for the 2021 American Physical Society Meeting (March 15-19), which will be an online meeting. This session covers most of the classical and emerging research topics of bio-inspired materials.
Dual-phase nanostructuring as a route to high-strength magnesium alloys, Wu, Chan, Zhu, Sun, Lu, Science, 2017
Novelty/impact/significance:
Create a magnesium-based supra-nanometer-sized dual-phase glass-crystal (SNDP-GC) material that approaches the near-ideal strength, 3.3 GPa and a Young’s modulus of 65 GPa. The fabrication is easy to scale up (magnetron sputtering) and the material is 10cm x 10cm with 10 µm in thickness, which is promising for various industrial applications.
Scientific question:
The IRDS analytics lab (https://alouhghalam.sites.umassd.edu) at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (UMassD) has a fully-funded PhD position. The graduate student will be working on an exciting project related to the dynamics of locally resonant structures and machine learning techniques with application to source localization. This position will involve working closely with a multidisciplinary team from UMassD, UMass Lowell and NUWC.

Novelty/impact/significance:
A novel heterogeneous lamella structure in Ti is created, which is as strong as the ultrafine-grained Ti and simultaneously as ductile as the coarse-grained Ti, with higher strain hardening than the coarse-grained Ti.
PhD positions are available at the University of Minnesota in the group of Prof. Stefano Gonella in the area of mechanical metamaterials.
Current topics of interest include:
1) Topological metamaterials;
2) Fracture mechanics in cellular materials;
3) Tunable and programmable metastructures.
