First AAM 2008 Conference

On June 17-20, 2008 the Inaugural Conference of the American Academy of Mechanics will be hosted in New Orleans, Louisiana. Following this conference this event will be hosted in the USA every four years to coincide with the ICTAM conference. This meeting will help the mechanics communities with applications in solids, fluids, bio, etc. to interact and set new challenging concepts and refinements in the existing areas of Mechanics.

The incomplete guide to the art of discovery

The warm reception to a previous post on learning to be a PhD advisor reminded me of a book, whose  title now appears as the title of this new post.  The book was written by Jack E. Oliver, a geologist, and was published in 1991 by Columbia University Press.  Looking at the book again the other day, I found the original receipt, dated 19 October 1991, from Chaucer's Bookstore, in Santa Barbara, where I started as an assistant professor at UCSB in 1989.  How delightful!

Rowland Junior Fellowship at Harvard University (30 Nov Deadline)

I am writing to draw your attention to our annual solicitation for applications to Rowland Junior Fellows Program, which may be of interest to your graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.

We have currently eight Rowland Junior Fellows at the Institute. As a look at our website will tell you (http://rowland.harvard.edu), they work on a broad range of topics, from condensed matter physics to plant physiology.

Openings for New Ph.D. Students on Composite Materials and Failure Mechanics at Vanderbilt University, USA

New students may start from January 2008 if the graduate students have previous research experience in solid mechanics (e.g., nano/micro-mechanics, computational mechanics) or material engineering (MD simulation, mechanical behaviors). Students will have the opportunities to conduct balanced experimental and computational work on the durabilty and impact failure of marine composite materials; failure and material designs of nanocomposite materials; or rehabilitation of infrastructure materials using composites and other materials.  An MS degree is required.

When is the right time for a Post Doc. to start applying for a lecturership position?

I normally come across many advertisements about lecturership positions in different universities all around the world. And I always wonder when is the right time for a post doc. to apply for it? As, I am never sure that my experience will be enough for the position.

What are the necessary ingredients of a post doc.'s CV, that should help him getting such position?

Covariance in Linearized Elasticity

In this paper we covariantly obtain the governing equations of linearized elasticity. Our motivation is to see if one can make a connection between (global) balance of energy in nonlinear elasticity and its counterpart in linear elasticity. We start by proving a Green-Naghdi-Rivilin theorem for linearized elasticity. We do this by first linearizing energy balance about a given reference motion and then by postulating its invariance under isometries of the Euclidean ambient space.

AFM modelling

Hi, every body...

Can anyone please tell me about the kind of modelling that is done to study the Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) ?

I have gone through the lumped mass models, but I want to know about the distributed models ?

Is anyone having some papers or links related to distributed modelling of AFM ?

Thank You......

Research experience from a physicist

Just back from Prof. Mahir Hussein's seminar. He is really one of best physicist I  have ever met. In past 30 years, he published more than 200 papers in the field of nuclear resonance, laser accelerated particles etc. There are more than 30 papers published in PRL alone. When input his name " M.Hussein" in arXiv.org, you can easily found 95 papers by him.

The Future of Conference

Attending conferences is one of the essential professional activities for scientific researchers. Conferences take various forms, such as community-wide meetings (e.g., MRS meetings, ASME congress, APS meetings), and topic-focused meetings/workshops (e.g., Plasticity07, Gordon Research Conferences(GRC)).  While people have different preferences on the types of conference to attend (e.g., see a recent iMech poll initiated by Biswajit Banerjee ), here are some common positive driving forces to motivate one to attend a conference:

Deformation of Halfring

I work in gas turbine business and I noticed following phenomena so I would like someone helps me to understand.

I noticed that component made as full ring remains circular after load with outer pressure and temperature gradient (Figure 1) and component made as connection of 2 halfrings (Figure 2) deforms as on Figure 3.

Learning to be a PhD advisor

We professors usually start our jobs unprepared. In our days as students, we are considered talented if we can solve problems posed by our professors. We might be even considered brilliant if we can solve them quickly and make a few extensions. After solving a few such problems, we write a thesis. We are then entrusted with a job as a professor. We soon realize that the skill of solving problems posed by others only plays a minor role in our jobs.
