Validity of Cauchy-Born hypothesis in multi-scale modeling of plastic deformations
The Cauchy-Born (CB) hypothesis has been widely used in multi-scale modeling of crystalline nano-structures.
SES-2017: Mechanics and Physics of Soft Materials -- Call for abstracts
Dear Colleagues,
Ph.D. Candidate Position on “Characterization of the local mechanical behavior of elastomer materials by instrumented nanoindentation”
One Ph.D. candidate position is available in the Fall 2017 in the Elastomer Research Center (Cermel) at the Laboratory of Mechanics and Rheology (LMR) in the Polytechnic School of the University of Tours in France.
Job description
The aim of this Ph.D. is to extend the comprehension of the local mechanisms involved in elastomer materials, in order to faithfully reproduce their behavior in finite element models. The Ph.D. applicant is expected to carry out both theoretical and experimental work.
Multi-scale finite element modelling of magnesium medical devices
Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for two full-time Postdoctoral Researcher positions on the finite element simulation of magnesium orthopaedic implants. These three year fixed term positions are funded through a US-Ireland R&D Partnership Programme involving collaboration between the SFI Centre for Research in Medical Devices (Cúram), the NSF Engineering Research Centre Revolutionizing Metallic Biomaterials (RMB, USA), and the Nanotechnology and Integrated Bioengineering Centre (NIBEC, Northern Ireland).
Interested candidates should send a CV to patrick.mcgarry@nuigalway.ie
The start date for both positions is September-November 2017.

Call for Abstracts: SES 2017@Boston, Symposium II-B: Computational Mechanics of Soft Materials in Medicine
This symposium will focus on the computational modeling of soft materials and their interactions with biological entities for application in medicine. We are particularly interested in materials that can be functionalized to react to external stimuli and/or change their mechanical and chemical properties substantially at room temperature, including, for instance, hydrogels, liquid crystals, un-crosslinked or weakly crosslinked polymers, granular materials, foams, lipid mono/bi-layers as well as soft biological materials (e.g., blood, extracellular matrices, cytoskeleton, biomembranes).

Society of Engineering Science (SES) Board of Directors---Call for Nominations
On behalf of the Board of Directors of SES, we are soliciting nominations to fill 2 positions in the SES Board of Directors. The SES members will elect the directors from the nominees. The Board plays an important role in defining the vision of SES, organizing various SES events, managing society finances, and evaluating nominations for the SES awards. Please nominate your colleagues to serve the Board. All we need are the name of the nominee and 1-2 sentences on why you think he/she might be appropriate for the SES Board.
