Subset Splitting Digital Image Correlation (SSDIC)

Following our recent article on this new method, we are making our Matlab routines available. The package contains standard DIC, SSDIC, plus a few extras. More info here

“Subset Splitting Digital Image Correlation” (SSDIC) is based on DIC, but in addition SSDIC can capture displacement discontinuities near shear bands or cracks, where standard DIC fails.

Stiffening of organosilicate glasses by organic cross-linking

Atomistic simulations show that organosilicates, used as low-permittivity dielectric materials in advanced integrated circuits, can be made substantially stiffer than amorphous silica, while maintaining a lower mass density. The enhanced stiffness is achieved by incorporating organic cross-links to replace bridging oxygen atoms in the silica network. To elucidate the mechanism responsible for the enhanced stiffness, the conformational changes in the network upon hydrostatic and shear loading are examined.

3rd International Conference on IMPACT LOADING OF LIGHTWEIGHT STRUCTURES

Dear Collegues,

On behalf of the International Scientific Committee, I am pleased to inform you of the 3rd International Conference on IMPACT LOADING OF LIGHTWEIGHT STRUCTURES (ILLS 2011) taking place in  Valenciennes, France, June 28th-July 1st, 2011: http://ills2011.org

Modeling post-tensioned concrete in ABAQUS

Hi All,

I want to model post-tensioning tendons embedded with concrete structure. Both ends of tendons are anchored. Can anyone inform me what kind of element most suitable to model the tendons and concrete structure in ABAQUS? I tried solid part for both items, yet as the tendon diameter is very small if compared to the concrete dimension, the resulting number of mesh on the concrete structure is very large.

Can nonlinear buckling analysis gives us an over estimate ?

I am working on thermal buckling of annular FGM plates using the DQ method in FORTRAN. The results show that for simply-simply edges, the nonlinear thermal buckling loads are greater than those of eigen buckling loads. But for clamped-clamped edges, as it may be expected, the nonlinear buckling loads are under estimate, i.e. they are lower than eigen buckling loads. Why?

Is it possible that the nonlinear buckling analysis gives us an over estimate load ?

Computational power for ALE meshing in 3d model

Hello everyone

Can anyone suggest me how much computational power needed to run a 3D model with ALE mesh in Abaqus/Explicit. I currently use (intel core i7 3.2 GHz and 12 GB RAM) but it seems not sufficient and abaqus abort itself after some running time. I would be very gratefull if you suggest any valuable information. by the way, I am working on cutting simulation in abaqus/explict.

How to get the elemental stiffness/damping matrix of a Maxwell spring-damper element?

A Maxwell spring-damper element consists of a nonlinear damper in series with a spring.

The force deformation relationship can ben found in the file attached . The problem is the constitutive relationship is in the form of  a PDE.

Does any on konw how to get the elemental stiffness/damping matrix?   Or can anyone suggest some reference?

Thanks a lot.

On the sign of shear stresses in the Mohr's circle

Usually, the position of points in Mohr's circle is attributed to a sign convetion related to shear stresses. It is shown that points in the circle related to shear stresses generating a clockwise moment are in the upper half of the circle as a consequence of the position of principal directions, not due to a convention. I hope this note could help to explain better the use of Mohr's circle in plane stress states.

Course on contact mechanics with the CONTACT software

Dear all,

On Thursday 28th and Friday 29th of October 2010, we will organise a course on using the CONTACT software at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands.

The aims of the course are:

Immediate Opening for Post Doctoral Fellow in Tribology of Magnetic Data Storage System

Data Storage Institute in Singapore (www.dsi.a-star.edu.sg) has an immediate opening for a Post Doctoral Fellow in Tribology of Magnetic Data Storage System. The PDF will be involved in the research and development of advanced overcoats and lubricants for future magnetic data storage systems. A PhD degree in Mechanical/Chemical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Physics/Chemistry is essential for this position. Good testing skills and strong research experience are desirable.

Material Parameter Calibration for Johnson Cook

Hi all ... Is there a way to find/calibrate material parameters for johnson and cook material model using experimental data in Abaqus? .. As far as i know abaqus has something called as data editor with which Hyperelastic materials models can be calibrated with experimental results. If not is there any other way arround to do calibration of material parameter with abaqus.

Geometric nonlinearity

hi all,

How to decide the geometric nonlinearity?.

i.e If i consider a sturcutre for example-fishing rod or wind turbine blade, how to decide that the structure is geometrically nonlinear.

Does it requires lots of calculations or by experimentation... For example by just observing the structure, is it possible to decide?

What are the reasons to consider the geometric nonliearities.
