Finite element programming for multiple load steps

Choose a channel featured in the header of iMechanica:

Hello Everybody

I am in need of help in including multiple load step options in my c program which is a fem solver for contact(2D).

I do not understand how  to go for second load step after the 1st one.

Its not clear for me what all i have to do, one thing i know is updating the nodal locations.

Please help me on this or guide to the place where ir can get help.

Thank You

Material Modelling

Hi all,

I doing modelling on soft clay behaviour which exhibit softening behaviour during constant strain loading. Here i followed a non-associated flow rule for better prediction of dilation . For the case of non-associated flow rule yield function and plastic potential function should not same i clear in that , my doubt is that we can use two different surface for yield and plastic potential function (eg: linear surface as yield surface and elliptical surface as plastic potential )?

Analytical elastic-plastic solutions for the torsion of a round bar with a heterogeneous cross section

Hello,

I am trying to derive/find an analytical expression
for the torsion of a round bar made of an heterogeneous material. But I just do
not seem to find any solution available in the literature other than for a
homogeneous material, which can be find in any theory of plasticity book (e.g.
Theory of Plasticity, 3rd Ed., J. Chakarabarty, pp. 132-136).

Freely jointed chain

A single strand of polymer is a chain of a large number of monomers.  The monomers are joined by covalent bonds, and two bonded monomers may rotate relative to each other.  At a finite temperature, the polymer rapidly changes from one configuration to another.  When the two ends of the polymer are pulled by a force, the distance between the two ends changes.  The polymer is known as an entropic spring.

Pile-Soil Interaction in Abaqus

Choose a channel featured in the header of iMechanica:

Hi

I am trying to simulate a laterally loaded pile in Abaqus. However, once the initial stress is generated using the geostatic step, i have no idea on how to replace the soil with the pile.

I request help with the situation.

Fracture using cohesive elements

Hi everyone ,

I'm Yashaswi Prateek  doing by final year project on fracture in composites using ABAQUS. I'm new to ABAQUS and have been trying to do some tutorials to get a better understanding of the software. After basic tutorials , i've started trying to generate a model using cohesive elements where i got stuck up. I have tried the procedure in Abaqus user manual and is showing some errors regarding interaction properties and creating a step.  It would be great help if someone could help me regarding how to model with cohesive elements.

Tensors

These notes may serve as a reminder of tensor algebra.  The notes supplement the course on advanced elasticity.  Several books are listed at the end of the notes.

Update on 17 April.  I am now breaking up the notes on tensors, cleaning them up, and posting them as sections on linear algebra.

Elasticity of rubber-like materials

In the notes on the general theory of finite deformation, we have left the free energy function unspecified. The notes here describe free energy function commonly used to describe the elasticity of rubber-like materials.  These notes are part of a course on advanced elasticity

Abaqus cohesive elements/cohesive surface

Choose a channel featured in the header of iMechanica:

For my
graduation project I’m working on a model to describe cracking behavior. For
this model I want to model a fibre-epoxy interface, see the attached figure 1
(due to symmetry only a quarter is modeled). The fibre part is modeled with
lineair elastic material. The epoxy part is modeled with CPS4 elements, with
elastic behavior and MAXPS damage (damaged evolution included). The connection
between the fibre and epoxy interface can be modeled with both a cohesive
surface and cohesive elements.  However

Cohesive elements wont break

Choose a channel featured in the header of iMechanica:

Hi!

My name is Christian and Im having big problems whit geting my cohesive elements to break. I have been stuck for some time now and cant find the right help. Im not experienced whit abaqus so its probably a very simple fault but I cant find it.

I have a model of 3 elements in 3D. Steel on the top and bottom and glue in the middle. I pull in the upper steel element but the glue wont break no matter how far I pull the top element. Im very insecure about my input numbers for the glue but I have tried a lot of diffrent combinations but I cant find any that works.

Royalty Free Illustrations

Does anyone know of a good source for free science and engineering illustrations? I'm particularly interested in crystallography, crystal defects/dislocations, and mechanical properties illustrations.

Thanks

Elastocapillarity

These notes are part of a course on advanced elasticity.  The notes recall several phenomena where both elasticity and surface energy are significant, including

  • Griffith crack
  • Adhesion of flexible structures
  • Wafer bonding
  • Contraction of a soft elastic sheet

The notes also contain a formulation of combined surface energy and elasticity of finite deformation.

Would you like to recommend some ebooks on computational nonlinearity?

Hi, everyone:

I'm recently very interested in computational nolinearity. Would you like recommend some monographs on the computation nonlinearity so that i can have a better understanding of the mechanism of ABAQUS.

    Thanks

An example employing smeared crack model in ABAQUS documentation cannot converge?

 Dear all:
I recently find an example in ABAQUS documentation cannont convergence.
The parametres related with the iteration of the Risk method is

Should a continuum be an open subset?

Choose a channel featured in the header of iMechanica:

I recent read the book of Prof. J. Tinsley Oden "A short course on nonlinear continuum mechanics"

http://users.ices.utexas.edu/~arbogast/cam397/oden0908.pdf

which declares that reference configuration is an open, bounded, connected subset of R3 with a smooth boundary (in Page 1).

It is strange to me beacause that means we cannot consider the boundary of the deformable bodies in its following discussion.

1st, 2nd & 3rd principal strain vs. minimum and maximum principal strains

Choose a channel featured in the header of iMechanica:

Hi All,

Non-maths person here struggling with the relationship between 1st, 2nd and 3rd principal strains generated by FEA software and minimum and maximum prinicipal strains often cited in the literature.

As i understand it the 1st principal strain is the most positive strain, 2nd and then 3rd most positive strains. For instance:

Case 1-

1st principal strain = +1000

2nd principal strain = +100

3rd principal strain = +50

Case 2-

1st principal strain = +500

2nd principal strain = -50

Fractal surface mesh generation

Saber El Arem (node/14053 ) wanted to know how a fractal surface mesh could be created.

I've had to do that in the past.  What I did was to use Arjun Viswanathan's 1999 Matlab snippet on creating a plasma fractal and write a wrapper around it to create an output file that could be read by the then available version of Abaqus.

I've attached a couple of Matlab files that should be able to do the job.   The .txt extensions are needed because iMechanica does not accept files with .m extensions.
