Postdoc Position in Computational Mechanics - Ohio State University

The Automated Computational Mechanics Laboratory (ACML) at The Ohio State University has an immediate opening for a one-year postdoctoral research associate position. The project is aimed at the application of the finite element method for simulating and optimizing the multiphysics laser ablation process in aircrafts. The optimization process involves characterizing the optimal laser parameters (e.g., peak power, fluence, intensity, etc.) to maximize the coating removal efficiency while minimizing damage to the substrate material.

Robust Stability at the Swallowtail Singularity

Consider the set of monic fourth-order real polynomials transformed so that the constant term is one. In the three-dimensional space of the coefficients describing this set, the domain of asymptotic stability is bounded by a surface with the Whitney umbrella singularity. The maximum of the real parts of the roots of these polynomials is globally minimized at the Swallowtail singular point of the discriminant surface of the set corresponding to a negative real root of multiplicity four.

MIT Postdoctoral Position in Finite Element Analysis for DNA nanotechnology

The Laboratory for Computational Biology and Biophysics at MIT (http://lcbb.mit.edu/) is seeking a highly motivated recent PhD graduate with expertise in nonlinear finite element analysis, ideally in the area of beam theory, with a keen interest in applying this knowledge to molecular modeling of DNA-based nanostructures. The candidate must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, PhD-level training in finite element analysis, and a strong record of publishing archival journal articles.

Technology Brief: Optimization of Turbine Blade Dovetail Geometries Using Abaqus and Isight

The reliability of a gas or steam turbine is strongly
dependent on the blade structural design.
Turbine blades are subjected
to very strenuous environments such as high temperatures, high stresses, and a
potentially high vibration environment. To avoid blade failures, they must be
designed to withstand these conditions.

Optimization and Flowchart Control in the Industry Process using Abaqus, CATIA, Moldflow with Isight Integration -2012

This study will be shown how to perform this integration with Isight as a manager of several different solvers and how all work together. The key aspect of the optimization process is the ability to integrate different analysis models such as: injection, structural, thermal, modal and etc.

Tech Brief: Composite Winglet Optimization for Reliability and Robustness

A new tech brief was recently released on composite optimization. See below for additional information:

Composite materials offer the potential for structures of lighter weight than their metallic counterparts. The stiffness and strength of a laminated composite structure depends directly on the ply stacking sequence. A design process that includes the effects of manufacturing tolerances and variability in lamina properties will allow for a more reliable and robust structure.

DNAD, a simple tool for automatic differentiation

All,

I am writing to introduce DNAD, a Fortran module I wrote for automatic differentiation of analysis codes written in Fortran including those legacy codes written in Fortran 77. Although only implementation using Fortran 90/95 was carried out, it is straightward to translate it to a language you like such as c/c++.
